Yoga Dog Pose (Adho MukhaSvanasana)


Yoga dog pose or downward-facing dog is one of the poses in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. Yoga dog pose stretches the shoulders, hamstrings, calves, arches, and hands. This pose is not only often performed in between other exercises, but it is in fact an exercise in itself as well.

Instructions

1. Begin with the cat pose. Come to your hands and knees. Your knees are directly below the hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread your palms and fingers.

2. Exhale and lift your knees and hips up. Draw your back backwards from the pelvis, so that your arms and back form one line. Stretch your legs and hips backwards from the top of your upper legs. Let your heels touch the floor as much as possible. Relax your head by hanging it down. yoga dog pose step 2 image

3. For the variation pose, lift your right leg up as high as possible. yoga dog pose step3 image

4. Bend the right knee so that your toes point to the front. Stay in the position for 1 minute or as long as you feel comfortable. yoga dog pose step 4 image
